Description

General aspect and origins - Abutilon megapotamicum is also known as flowering maple or trailing abutilon. It is a shrub which is appreciated for its ornamental hanging red and yellow lantern-like flowers.
Leaves - Leaves are bright-green, evergreen to semi-decidious, alternate, sometimes with slight lobes but generaly entire. A. megapotamicum is a shrub with a climbing habit.
Flowers - From spring to the first frosts, this plant bears ornamental yellow and red hanging flowers. This species is thus sometimes named Chinese lanterns.

Culture

A. megapotamicum is one of the hardiest species, being root-hardy down to about 15°F (-10°C) for a short period of time. Leaves and stems will be damaged below 23°F (-5°C) so this plant should be grown outdoors in USDA zones 8 (with some protection for the roots), 9 and warmer.
Soil - This plant needs a moist, fairly rich and well-drained.

Propagation

This plant can be propagated by seeds (in spring), air layers or cuttings. (In summer)
