Description
General aspect and origins - Platycarya strobilacea is a decidious tree which is native to Southeastern Asia, and more precisely to China, Corea, Japan and Taiwan. It can grow up to 30 ft (10 m) and more.
Leaves - This tree has a decidious foliage. Leaves are alternate, pinnate with up to 15 leaflets. Each leaflet is about 4 in (10 cm) long and 1 in (2.5 cm) wide. Young leaves are brown-green, and turn green with age.
Flowers - This tree is monoecious. Male flowers are erect, 4 in (10 cm) long, yellow and are grouped around a single female flower, which is 2.5 in (6+ cm) long. These flowers appear during late spring.
Fruits - Fruits are erect and have a cone-like aspect. They are 1.5-2 in (3.5-5 cm) long.Culture
P. strobilacea is fairly frost-hardy, withstanding cold temperatures down to about 0°F (-18°C) and is thus adapted to USDA zones 7 and warmer, and can even be tried in sheltered areas of USDA zone 6.

This tree is propagated by seeds, which can be sown in fall, when ripe.
