Platycarya strobilacea is a decidious tree which is native to Southeastern Asia, and more precisely to China, Corea, Japan and Taiwan. It can grow up to 30 ft (10 m) and more.
P. strobilacea is fairly frost-hardy, withstanding cold temperatures down to about 0°F (-18°C) and is thus adapted to USDA zones 7 and warmer, and can even be tried in sheltered areas of USDA zone 6.

This tree is monoecious. Male flowers are erect, 4 in (10 cm) long, yellow and are grouped around a single female flower, which is 2.5 in (6+ cm) long. These flowers appear during late spring.
