The plant of the day
Passiflora x belotii (the Passifloraceae familly)

Description

General aspect and origins - Passiflora x belotii, syn. P. x alato-caerulea, syn. P. x munroi is also known as P. 'Impératrice Eugénie' or P. 'Kaiserin Eugenia'. This hybrid is a cross between P. alata and P. caerulea. This vine is fairly vigorous, and has scented white and pink flowers.
Leaves - The foliage is evergreen to semi-decidious. Leaves are glabrous, light-green, generally trilobed. This hybrid often develops during the winter months a viral infection, the leaves then showing some yellow spots or areas. These symptoms generally disappear during the next spring.
Flowers - This hybrid has very ornamental flowers, with white sepals and pink to light purple-pink petals. The corona is purple-blue with white stripes. Flowers are very scented, and are 4 to 5 in. (10-12 cm) wide.
Fruits - This vine is a sterile hybrid and does not set fruits.

Culture

This hybrid benefits from the relative frost hardiness of its parent P. caerulea. But its other parent, P. alata, is more tender and will die below about 28°F. (-2°C) In practice, this vine should survive brief frosts down to about 21-26°F (-3 to -6°C).
Soil - Like most passion flowers, this hybrid needs a well-drained soil.

Propagation

This vine is generally propagated by cuttings or air layering.
