Plumbago auriculata syn. Plumbago capensis is also known as Cape plumbago or Cape Leadwort. It is a shrub with slender stems that can be grown as a vine. This plant has pale-blue, mauve or white ornamental flowers that bloom over a long period.
The Cape leadwort is widely grown in Mediterranean areas, were it is often used as a ground cover or grown as a vine. However, it is fairly frost hardy, and will withstand low temperatures down to about 14-18°F (-8°C to -10°C) for brief periods.
There are several selections of interest, including:
- P. capensis 'Imperial Blue' - Deep blue flowers.
- P. capensis 'Royal Cape' - Cobalt-blue flowers.
- P. capensis var. alba - This variety has pure white flowers.
Leaves are evergreen, entire, light green, 2 in (5 cm) long and 3/4 in (2 cm) wide.
This shrub mainly blooms in late spring and summer, but can bloom all year long in warm climates. Flowers are sky-blue to blue-mauve or white. They are grouped in terminal panicles that are 4-6 in (10-15 cm) long.
