Alocasia wentii
hardy elephant ear

Alocasia wentii is also known as the hardy elephant ear, however it is not the only hardy plant from this genus. This hybrid is of unknown parentage, maybe A.sedenii x A.odora. It is to be verified, though. Whatever the case, this elephant ear is very ornamental, with contrasting veins and dark-purple undersides.
This Alocasia is not only very ornamental, it also has a very good frost-hardiness, as it can be grown in USDA Zones 7b and warmer. The roots should thus withstand temperatures down to about 10°F (-12°C). However, leaves will be damaged at 28°F (-2°C), but will vigorously regrow in the spring. Note :This plant may prove skin irritating. When pruning, leaves should be handled with gloves.

Leaves of this alocasia are not as long as those of A.macrorhiza or A.odora, but can however be as long as 3-4 ft (90-120 cm) long in optimal growing conditions. However, they generally are 16-20 in (40-50 cm) long. The upper side of the leaf is green, and the underside is purple-green to purple-black.
The inflorescence is typical of the Araceae familly, with a scented white-cream spadix and a green spathe.

Alocasia wentii requiert les expositions suivantes : ombre,mi-ombre,lumière
This plant prefers a well-drained and fertile soil that remains moist. However, it is also adapted to humid soils.
