Rhododendron × 'Red Argenteum' is a cross between R. grande and R. arboreum. There is not much information about the history of this hybrid, except for the fact that it was «rediscovered» in the Heligan Gardens, in UK.
This hybrid should be hardy to about 5°F (-15°C). However, it dislikes spring frosts, and strong winds. It should thus be grown in protected areas. When grown in optimal conditions, it is a vigorous hybrid that can be more than 30 ft (10 m) tall.
Leaves of R. x 'Red Argenteum' are evergreen. Growth is vigourous and occurs early in spring, which may be a problem in climates with spring frosts. Young foliage is green-white with red bracts, and turns deep green when older.

R. x 'Red Argenteum' has large inflorescences, which are as large as pomelos. When young, flowers are purple-pink, and when older, they turn light-pink with a darker center. Blooming occurs in mid-winter to late-winter.
