Description

General aspect and origins - Morus kagayamae is also known as the mulberry tree. (Like its close relatives Morus alba and Morus nigra) This is a decidious tree that is native to Asia, and more precisely to Japan. This tree bears small edible berries.
Leaves - Leaves are decidious, lobed, and deep green with a shiny upper side.
Fruits - The fruits are edible, sweet and juicy. They are red, and turn black when ripe. They are transformed into jams, sherbets, juices, and syrups. This fruit is closely related to the white mulberry (Morus alba) However, the black fruits of Morus kagayamae are often considered being of better quality.

Culture

This mulberry tree is often appreciated for its foliage and for the shade it provides. It can withstand frosts down to about 10°F, which enables to grow it in USDA zones 8 and warmer.
Soil - The mulberry prefers a deep a well-drained ground.

This mulberry can be propagated by cuttings, air layers or by budding techniques.
