winter jasmine

Description

General aspect and origins - Jasminum nudiflorum is also known as winter jasmine, or yellow jasmine. It is a shrub with slender stems, that can reach 12 ft (4 m) tall and sometimes more, provided it is trained on a treillis or a wall. Unlike most jasmines, its yellow flowers are not scented. However, it is an ornamental plant that blooms in winter and early spring.
Leaves - This plant has opposite, trifoliate and decidious leaves. Even in winter, it has an ornamental aspect, thanks to its deep green stems (and of course to its flowers).
Flowers - This jasmine profusely blooms in winter and early spring. Flowers are 1 - 1.5 in (2.5 - 4 cm) across and are bright-yellow. They are not scented.

Culture

This jasmine is very frost hardy, as it will withstand cold temperatures down to about 5°F to -5°F (about -15°C to -20°C). It thus can be grown in USDA zones 6 and warmer.

  • 'Mystique' - (syn. 'Argenteum') With a variegated foliage. (Green and cream-white)

  • 'Aureum' - With a golden-green foliage.

Propagation

This plant is easily propagated by cuttings or air layers. As its long stem tend to arch to the ground, were they quickly root.
