Description

General aspect and origins - Jasminum polyanthum is also known as winter jasmine, pink jasmine, pink winter jasmine or sometimes Chinese evergreen jasmine. This vine is native to Asia, and more precisely to China. It can grow up to more than 20 ft (6 m) and has numerous and strongly perfumed flowers in late winter and sometimes in spring also.
Leaves - This vine has a semi-decidious to evergreen foliage, depending on the climate. Leaves are opposed, pinnate with 5 to 7 leaflets.
Flowers - Flowers are pure white, but the flower buds are pink. (This explains the common names) They are strongly perfumed, and are grouped in clusters. They bloom in late winter, and sometimes through spring.
Fruits - The fruits are inedible, small and globose.

Culture

This jasmine is an ornamental vine, with an interesting foliage and numerous and very fragrant flowers. It is vigorous and only needs a few seasons to cover large areas. It can grow in light shade situations, even if it will prefer full sun exposure. Jasminum polyanthum is fairly frost hardy, as it can withstand low temperatures down to about 18°F (-8°C) and has been reported to survive even lower temperatures.
Soil - This jasmine likes fertile and well-drained soils that remain moist.

This jasmine can be propagated by seeds, cuttings or air-layers.
