Description
General aspect and origins - Calliandra portoricensis is also known as snowflake acacia or powder-puff. This shrub or little tree is native to Central America, and most precisely to Mexico, Panama, and to the West Indies.
Leaves - This shrub has evergreen bipinnate small leaves. (Each leaflet being about 0.5 in (1.25 cm) long.
Flowers - It has white scented and globose flowers, which look like small snowballs. They last about one day.
Fruits - Fruits are pods, which are about 4 in (10 cm) long.Culture
Calliandra portoricensis can be grown in areas where frosts are brief and moderate, I.e. in USDA zones 10a and warmer. In other places, it should be protected in winter. It should be sparsely watered in winter.
Soil - This shrub prefers a well-drained and fertile ground.Propagation
Calliandra portoricensis can be propagated by seeds, cuttings or air-layers. Seeds should be sown in spring for best results. Cuttings should be made in summer. Air-layer is the hardest technique for this Calliandra, but is possible if tried in spring.
