There are more than 70 species in the genus Alocasia, most of them native to tropical Asia. These are generally big perennial and upright plants. Alocasia odora is also known as giant upright elephant ear. It is very similar to Alocasia macrorrhiza, which is also named giant upright elephant ear.
Alocasia odora is an ornamental plant with big leaves and with a real "tropical look", that may withstand low temperatures, down to about 0°F (-12°C to -15°C) if the ground is very well-drained. This Alocasia has big upright leaves that can be more than 3 ft (1 m) long, very similar to that of Alocasia macrorrhiza. However, unlike this latter, Alocasia odora has slightly pelted leaves.
This plant has inflorescences that are about 8 in (20 cm) long, and that are made of a green and white spathe that covers the tiny flowers. Female flowers are grouped at the lower part of the inflorescence, whereas the male flowers are at the top.
Fruits, which are orange-red, are not edible.
