Metrosideros polymorpha
'Ohi'a lehua

Metrosideros polymorpha is a tree which is native to some of the Hawaiian islands, including Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu. This Metrosideros deserves its species name (polymorpha), as it is a highly variable plant, that can be a few dozen inches up to a hundred feet (30+ m) tall. Also, flowers can be of various colors, including yellow, orange, red and salmon.
This Metrosideros, which is endemic to the Hawaiian isles, is likely to be less frost-hardy than its relatives from New-Zealand. However, some researches, including Photosynthesis and freezing avoidance in ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) at treeline in Hawaii (Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. 32(4): 381-387.) from S.Cordell, G.Goldstein, P.J.Melcher and F.C.Meinzer, seem to highlight that the great variability of this species also expresses in the frost hardiness of the different varieties, whether they grow from sea level to the higher elevations of the Hawaiian islands (about 2500 m). It would thus be interesting to further test the frost hardiness of the high-elevation Metrosideros polymorpha varieties.

This shrub is a relatively slow grower. Leaves are generally oval and are about .5 in (1.25 cm) to 3 in (7.5 cm), depending on the varieties.
This Metrosideros can bloom all the year round, with a maximum attained in spring. Flowers can be orange, red, salmon or yellow.
Fruits are capsules that are about .25 in (0.6 cm) in diameter.
