Description

General aspect and origins - Roystonea regia, also known as Cuban royal palm or simply royal palm, is a massive palm which is native to Cuba and Honduras. It has a beautiful crown of pinnate leaves, and a grey trunk which bulges and give the palm a specific aspect. This palm can reach up to 60 ft (20 m) tall.
Leaves - The royal palm has pinnate leaves that can be up to about 10 ft (3 m) long.
Flowers - The royal palm has white-cream to yellow-cream inflorescences and are up to about 3.5 ft (1 m) long.
Fruits - Fruits are oblong and purple, and contain a unique seed.

Culture

The royal palm is a tall and massive showy palm, that can withstand brief cold spells down to 28°F (-2°C). But it is best grown in frost free areas, in USDA zones 10b and warmer.
Soil - These palm trees prefer well-drained and moist grounds, but can withstand occasional droughts.

Propagation

The royal palm can be propagated by seeds. Germination is fairly easy, provided that seeds are fresh enough.
