Description

General aspect and origins - Musella lasiocarpa, also known as Chinese dwarf banana or golden lotus banana, is a close relative of banana trees, (Musa sp.) and also belongs to the Musaceae familly. It is native to the Yunnan province in China. Musella lasiocarpa is known for its showy golden yellow erect inflorescences, that generally appear during the second year of cultivation, and that can last a few months.
Leaves - Leaves of the Chinese dwarf banana are slightly glaucous, lanceolate and oblong, looking like banana leaves.
Flowers - The Chinese dwarf banana has showy golden yellow flowers that can last up to several months.

Culture

The Chinese dwarf banana is not widely grown outside its area of origin yet. However, first observation suggest this plant should be root hardy at least in USDA zones 8 winters and warmer. Its thus should withstand brief temperatures down to about 15°F (-9°C), and should regrow from the roots after such frosts.
Soil - The Chinese dwarf banana needs a well-drained and fertile ground.

Propagation

Musella lasiocarpa can be propagated by seeds, or by separation of the suckers. Seeds of The Chinese dwarf banana is said to be relativement hard to germinate. Placing the seeds in a cool place (E.g. fridge) for about a month will accelerate to process.
