Description

General aspect and origins - Protea aurea is a species which is native to South Africa, and which can reach 10 to 15 ft (about 3 to 5 m) in its native area. Flowers are cream to pink.
Leaves - Leaves of Protea aurea are wide, and even wider for subspecies Protea aurea subsp. potsbergensis. This latter subspecies has more silvery leaves.
Flowers - Flowers of Protea aurea are yellow-cream, pink or carmine. Styles are longer than the bracts, and the flower is very ornamental.

Culture

This Protea species is showy, and moderately frost hardy. However, a mature shrub will withstand negative temperatures down to 28°F - 26°F (-2°C to -3°C)
Soil - Protea species require a well-drained and slightly acidic ground.

Propagation

Protea aurea is propagated by seeds, cuttings or grafting. However, neither of these techniques are easy for Protea species.
