Description

General aspect and origins - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, also known as Chinese hibiscus or rose of China, is an evergreen shrub of the Malvaceae familly. It is native to southeastern Asia, and can reach 15 ft (5 m) in tropical areas. There are many varieties and cultivars, with more modest dimensions, and multicolored wide flowers.
Leaves - Leaves of the Chinese hibiscus are evergreen. They are glossy and wide.
Flowers - This hibiscus has large flowers that may reach up to 8 in (20 cm) wide, but which are more generally 4-5 in (10-12 cm) wide. They are single or double, with various colors, including white, yellow, orange, pink and red.

Culture

The Chinese hibiscus is a tropical shrub that can be grown in subtropical areas. It may withstand slightly negative temperatures of 28°F-30°F (-1°C to -2°C) for brief periods. But even then, foliage is likely to be damaged.
Soil - The Chinese hibiscus requires a well-drained ground.

Propagation

This hibiscus is propagated by cuttings and layering. Propagation by seeds is also possible, but results are uncertain if the mother plant is a variety or a cultivar.
