Description

General aspect and origins - Passiflora alata, the wingstem passionflower, also known as the fragrant granadilla, is native from Brazil, and is grown in many warm areas in the world. This vigorous evergreen climber has entire leaves, and showy fragrant flowers, which are crimson, with purple and white filaments. The fruits are edible.
Leaves - The evergreen leaves of the wingstem passionflower are entire, and may reach up to 6 in long (15 cm) and 4 in wide (10 cm)
Flowers - The fragrant granadilla has showy and scented flowers, which are up to 5 in wide (12 cm), with crimson petal/sepals and white and purple striped filaments.
Fruits - The wingstem passionfruit is an ovoid golden to orange fruit. These fruits are about 4 in (10 cm) long. They are edible and quite popular in Brazil.

Culture

This passionflower is not very hardy, but may withstand about 28°F (-2°C) frosts.
Soil - This passionflower needs to grow in a well drained soil.

Pests and diseases

This vine, like many passionflowers, is susceptible to viral diseases and nematodes in the soil, especially in tropical areas.
