That is a fundamental question 
Exotic gardening is of course a relative concept. I think it refers to everything which is non-native to your area, so that's quite a large amount of exotic plants to grow!
My preference goes towards "tropicalesque" plants, which look tropical and which can be grown in temperate areas. So I like to find frost-hardy plants from tropical countries, or related to those found in tropical countries.
