Hello,

I live in Northwestern germany, and I am a perfect beginner with tropical looking plants. Some websites, including this one, finished to convince me that an exotic garden may be possible in my place! :up:

So I'd like to ask a few questions (pardon my English, which is not always top-level) regarding my little project. I have not an extended knowledge of tropical-looking plants. That's the first trick!

Could you "introduce" me with the easiest tropical-looking plants that you know? Also, they should be fairly hardy. Water is not a problem here, I can manually and automatically water, if needed.

Any suggestion?

welcome here :-D

I don't know much about German climate. However, I believe it is USDA (equivalent) zone 7 or so. I think first tropicalesque plants to search for could be :

- Trachycarpus fortunei, Very hardy palm!
- Musa basjoo, the Japanese banana, a very good choice for large broad leaves!
- bamboos
- Pawlonias (huuuuge leaves)
- ... That's all for the moment :-)

BTW, you also can have a look at this discussion about tropicalesque plants. Yes, I know, it's zone 9 oriented, but you may pick some good ideas :-)

Hi. MirandaPn, Nice to meet you.You already know about Fatsia Japonica. How about Cordyline Australis,this is probably the fastest growing palm-like tree in your zone,it's easy to care for just tie the leaves up in very bad weather..Also ,alittle less hardy perhaps is Phoenix Canariensis,but well worth the effort. I'm not so sure about Cordyline autralis (or any Cordyline btw).
In Germany, some Yucca are very likely to survive though. Some can take 0°F without much damage.
